Welcome to the Columbia Journal of Undergraduate Mathematics! Established in 2023 in partnership with the Columbia Department of Mathematics, the Columbia Undergraduate Mathematics Society, and Columbia Libraries, CJUM was founded to fill an important gap we found in undergraduate mathematics. Plenty of high-quality expository work is produced every year by undergraduates through coursework, REUs, and senior thesis, but there are few opportunities for undergraduates to publish such writing. This writing then vanishes, neither preserved nor shared. The Columbia Journal of Undergraduate Mathematics seeks to rectify this problem by offering undergraduates an opportunity to publish, preserving and sharing their work for the larger math community.
Though many undergraduate students get a chance to build strong foundations in algebra, analysis, and geometry, they may not always get a chance to learn about the bridges that connect one of these worlds to another. Yet some of the most interesting mathematical research is built upon these intersections, and we could not pass up the opportunity to advertise a few of the ways disparate mathematical areas intertwine. Within this third general issue of the Columbia Journal of Mathematics, readers will get a chance to learn about how hyperbolic geometry connects to the braid group, how length and cardinality can utterly disagree about the size of a set, and what vector calculus has to say about the topology of spaces.
