As part of the submission process, authors are required to check off their submission's compliance with all of the following items, and submissions may be returned to authors that do not adhere to these guidelines.

  • The submission has not been previously published, nor is it before another journal for consideration (or an explanation has been provided in Comments to the Editor).
  • The submission file is in OpenOffice, Microsoft Word, or RTF document file format.
  • Where available, URLs for the references have been provided.
  • The text is single-spaced; uses a 12-point font; employs italics, rather than underlining (except with URL addresses); and all illustrations, figures, and tables are placed within the text at the appropriate points, rather than at the end.
  • The text adheres to the stylistic and bibliographic requirements outlined in the Author Guidelines.
  • The author read the Author Agreement and agrees to its terms, which will apply to this submission if and when it is published by the Journal.

Overview:

CJRL publishes two times per year, during the Fall and Spring.  The Journal welcomes the submission of original manuscripts — Articles or Essays — from scholars, practitioners, and policymakers.

Requirements:

All manuscript correspondence should be submitted through ExpressO or Scholastica. We also accept emailed submissions sent to cjrl.columbia@gmail.com.  We ask that both text and footnotes are typed. We also ask that the manuscript is double-spaced with one-inch margins and conforms to the most recent edition of The Bluebook: A Uniform System of Citation.  Please submit a resume or curriculum vitae along with the piece. Submissions from current students will not be considered.

CJRL IS AN Express0 Top 10 LAW REVIEW

ExpressO Top 10 Law Review

Timing:

We accept submissions on a rolling basis, although it is best to submit by mid-August to be reviewed for the Fall issue and by early November to be reviewed for the Spring issue. We are NOT LONGER accepting manuscripts for Volume 111.

Review Process:

All submitted manuscripts that are considered in the scope of the Journal undergo a single-blind peer review process, which means that while peer reviewer identities are kept confidential, author identities are made known to reviewers.

Request to Expedite Review:

Authors may request an expedited review of a submission when faced with a deadline for response to another publication offer.  Requests for expedited review may be made through ExpressOScholastica, or via email to cjrl.columbia@gmail.com. Requests for expedited review should include:

  1. Authors’ names, email addresses, and direct phone numbers
  2. Submission title
  3. Existing offer and deadline
  4. Date by which the author would like a response

We will endeavor to accommodate expedited review requests, although we may ask the author to request an extension from the publication that extended their existing offer. We wish to ensure that each author receives a full and adequate review.
