Submission Preparation Checklist
As part of the submission process, authors are required to check off their submission's compliance with all of the following items, and submissions may be returned to authors that do not adhere to these guidelines.- The submission has not been previously published, nor is it before another journal for consideration.
- The submission file is in Microsoft Word document file format.
- The author has prepared the abstract, bio, contact information, keywords, and essay word count (including footnotes) in a separate document. Your submission will not be reviewed without this information.
- The text is double-spaced; uses a 12-point font; employs italics, rather than underlining (except with URL addresses); and all illustrations, figures, and tables have been dis-embedded from the text and attached separately.
- The text adheres to the stylistic and bibliographic requirements outlined in the Author Guidelines, which is found in About the Journal.
- To ensure the integrity of the blind peer-review for submission to Small Axe, every effort should be made to prevent the identities of the authors and reviewers from being known to each other. This involves the authors, editors, and reviewers (who upload documents as part of their review) deleting their names from the text, with "Author" and year used in the references and footnotes, instead of the authors' name, article title, etc.
- Small Axe uses footnotes. The note call-out number should be placed at the end of the sentence whenever possible, or, if it needs to appear within the sentence, should be placed after the nearest punctuation.

We require that you obtain the proper permissions for any images and/or epigraphs that are featured in your essay. Please refer to the Permissions Guidelines instruction sheet detailing the process to obtain third-party permissions.
Keep in mind that our publisher, Duke University Press, has now instituted a new policy regarding epigraphs. The short of it is that epigraphs are now to be treated like images and therefore permissions are required for reproduction.
If the epigraph is substantially discussed in your essay then it may be covered by "fair use". In order to claim fair use you must fill out the same permissions form. Simply write “fair use” in the top portion of the form that asks for the rights holder’s information, indicate where in the essay the discussion of the epigraph occurs, and fill out the rest of the form as you would normally.
Prompt return of permissions forms ensures that work moves on to the subsequent phases of the publication process.
