Neurodevelopmental disorders or NDDs are a combination of mental conditions that influence how the nervous system functions. Certain types of NDDs include Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder(ADHD), Autism, Cerebral Palsy, and intellectual disabilities. These conditions may be the result of trauma, illnesses, stress, or even genetics. It often occurs in children during infancy or childhood. However, it is common that cases are undiagnosed or unrecognized until adulthood. My 9-year-old brother is on the autism spectrum, a common type of NDDs. He was a normal infant until the age of 1 when me and my family noticed he was not speaking. At that time, my brother had a doctor who disliked him and did not take any action when my mother shared her concerns. When he turned 2, he got a new doctor who understood my family's worries and took action by conducting a series of tests to find answers to his situation. My brother was given different treatments including occupational and speech therapy where he was being taught sign language virtually. Finally, at the age of 3, he was diagnosed with autism spectrum. The diagnosis deeply affected my family because we had never experienced a child with a disorder and we didn't know if he would get better as he grew up. Every person with NDDs has unique experiences with some having it severe and others more lightly. My brother's autism is high-functioning. He does not communicate or interact with others normally and has difficulty learning. He has really strong emotions. Whether he is happy, sad, or angry he expresses it by being loud and hyper. Individuals affected by NDDs are prone to reduced cognitive performance and experience disruptions in everyday life, such as emotional, psychological, physical, and social difficulties. Children with NDDs encounter difficulties in blending in with their mates and navigating life. Although cures are currently unavailable, there are treatments and methods available for improving and managing the effects and symptoms of Neurodevelopmental disorders. These treatments involve Applied behavioral analysis (APA), Cognitive-behavioral therapy(CBT), speech therapy, developmental therapy, and psychotherapy. My brother attends a school for children with disabilities. Such environments aid in providing comfort for individuals with NDDs, tending to their needs and assisting them in adapting to their bodies. My brother recently learned how to function a TV remote without being taught. Neurodevelopmental disorders are complex and require further research.
