As part of the submission process, authors are required to check off their submission's compliance with all of the following items, and submissions may be returned to authors that do not adhere to these guidelines.

  • Submitted material must be original, and not under consideration elsewhere. Waxing Moon does not publish materials that are already in print or online.
  • Authors take full responsibility for the originality, content, and opinions expressed in their submission.

  • Material submitted to the journal must be submitted in English, Chinese or Tibetan.
  • The submission follows The Chicago Manual of Style (17th edition); Spellings and usage follow American spelling and conform to the Merriam-Webster Dictionary (http://www.merriam-webster.com)

  • The article uses the following Romanization: Chinese: Pinyin; Tibetan: Wylie.
  • Authors' names must be left off of the manuscript, as Waxing Moon engages in double-blind reviews.
  • Authors must obtain permission for the publication or reproduction of copyrighted material (including images) where appropriate and to offer proper acknowledgment. The author(s) is responsible for reproduction costs and all associated fees.
  • Waxing Moon editors reserve the right to make editorial changes to comply with style and grammar. No substantive changes will be made without the author’s approval.

Thank you for your interesting in submitting to Waxing Moon. We accept submissions of original research articles, field reports, book and film reviews, workshop and conference write-ups, alongside literature in translation and photo essays.

Submission Types

Research Articles: original, previously unpublished contributions based on original research in Tibetan and Himalayan studies (up to 8,000 words, non-inclusive of title, abstract, notes, and references). 

Research article manuscripts submitted to Waxing Moon should not have been published elsewhere and should not be under review for publication elsewhere. Article manuscripts, including notes and references, should be no longer than 8,000 words and must include a 150 word abstract and a list of five key words that represent the broader themes of the research.

Authors' names must be left off of the manuscript, as Waxing Moon engages in double-blind reviews. 

Please use the following Romanization: Chinese: Pinyin; Tibetan: Wylie.

Perspectives: contributions that present an original viewpoint (up to 5,000 words). Such contributions are still peer reviewed. 

Conference Reports: detail the location, proceedings, and scope of conferences, symposia and workshops relating to some aspect of Himalayan studies (up to 1,500 words). 

Literature in Translation: translations (from Chinese, Tibetan or another Himalayan language) of poems, short stories, and excerpts of longer forms of literature (up to 5,000 words). 

Artwork: includes original drawings, photographs, or other forms of art. Please submit high- versions of all images following the guidelines outlined below. 

Reviews: includes book and film reviews (up to 1,500 words). 

Photo Essays: a thematic group of photos that tell a story, highlight a theme or (maximum 10 photos) 
Other: Other forms of work that do not fit into one of the above categories may be proposed to the editors.
