Fall 2023: Rethinking the Second War in South Asia: Between Theatres and Beyond Battles (11/20/2023)

CJA's faculty advisor, Professor Isabel Huacuja Alonso, in collaboration with the South Asia Institute and the Department of Middle Eastern, South Asian, and African Studies at Columbia University, is organizing a conference on Monday, 11/20 at 4:15 p.m. EST. The event celebrates the launch of "Rethinking the Second War in South Asia: Between Theatres and Beyond Battles," a special issue of Modern Asian Studies. The event will feature presentations by the editors of the issue (Professor Isabel Huacuja Alonso and Dr. Andrew Amstutz), authors who contributed to the issue, and undergraduate student editors at CJA.

Fall 2023: Call for Graduate Peer Reviewers

The Columbia Journal of Asia (CJA) is currently recruiting graduate peer reviewers from the academic community. If you are a graduate student in a Master's or Doctoral program whose work relates to the study of Asia and/or the Asian diaspora, we would welcome your help in reviewing articles for our journal, whether for the upcoming Fall 2023 issue or for future publications. Peer-review is an essential part of academia, and we would love to have you on board with us for this integral process. Please complete the peer reviewer interest form in order to join, and feel free to direct any questions about the journal to columbiajournalofasia@gmail.com.

Fall 2023: Columbia/Barnard Undergraduates, Join the CJA Editorial Board!

Call for Undergraduate Editors
Interested Columbia and Barnard undergraduates are welcome to join the Columbia Journal of Asia (CJA) Editorial Board. CJA is an open-access, peer-reviewed platform for creative and academic pieces on Asia, the Asian diaspora, and comparative studies broadly related to Asia. It addresses an urgent need for more representation and understanding of Asian narratives, not in isolation, but as an integral part of the study of humanities and social sciences in academic and artistic circles.
Past editorial or research experience in Asia is not required. We currently have openings for articles editors, as well as editors managing the production process (typesetting, copyediting) and social media. Fall 2023: Call for Submissions

The Columbia Journal of Asia (CJA) is currently accepting submissions for its next issue, due by 11:59pm EST on Wednesday, August 30th, 2023. The priority submissions deadline is 11:59pm EST on Tuesday, August 15th, 2023. We welcome both research papers ("notes" of 1,500-4,000 words and "articles" of 4,000+ words) and creative works (visual art, poetry, prose, and translations of under 2,000 words). Undergraduates from all universities, majors, tracks, and class years are encouraged to submit.

CJA is an open-access, peer-reviewed platform for academic and creative pieces relating to Asia and the Asian diaspora, launched in partnership with Columbia Libraries and faculty in the departments of History, MESAAS, EALAC, and Gender Studies. It addresses an urgent need for meaningful representations of Asian narratives as an integral part of the humanities, arts, and social sciences.

Spring 2023: Call for Submissions

The Columbia Journal of Asia (CJA) is currently accepting submissions for its second issue, due by 11:59pm EST on Tuesday, February 7th, 2023. The priority submissions deadline is 11:59pm EST on Saturday, January 28th, 2023. We welcome both research papers ("notes" of 1,500-4,000 words and "articles" of 4,000+ words) and creative works (visual art, poetry, prose, and translations of under 2,000 words). Undergraduates from all universities, majors, tracks, and class years are encouraged to submit.

Fall 2022 CJA Launch Event: December 9, 2022

The Columbia Journal of Asia (CJA) is excited to be hosting its Fall launch event this Friday, December 9th, from 2-4pm. The event will be hybrid, with an in-person gathering in 411 Fayerweather Hall and a zoom link sent to participants who RSVP. CJA's launch will feature presentations of academic and creative works Asia and the Asian diaspora published by undergraduates across the world, and a faculty panel on 'Revolutionaries and Resistance Across Borders' featuring Professors Manan Ahmed (History), Neferti X.M. Fall 2022 Speaker Series: 'Elizabeth's Era,' Panel on Empire and Decolonization (11/9/22)

CJA is excited to announce the second event in its Fall 2022 Speaker series, "Elizabeth's Empire: A Panel Discussion on the British Empire and Decolonization," organized in partnership with the Columbia Journal of History and the Columbia History Association, and featuring Columbia Professors Susan Pedersen (History) and Isabel Alonso (MESAAS). Fall 2022 Speaker Series: Conversation with Amit Chaudhuri (9/13/22)

The Columbia Journal of Asia (CJA) will welcome Indian novelist, literary critic, and musician Amit Chaudhuri on Tuesday, Sept. 13, from 8–9pm EST for the first of its Fall 2022 Speaker Series. The event will feature a reading and discussion of Dr. Chaudhuri’s newest book, Sojourn, and his engagement with themes of diaspora and Asian antiquities, with time for audience Q&A.

CJA is an open-access, peer-reviewed platform for undergraduate creative and academic pieces on Asia and the Asian diaspora. Developed at Columbia University, CJA addresses an urgent need for representation and understanding of Asian narratives—not in isolation, but as an integral part of the study of humanities and social sciences in academic and artistic circles. Our most recent issue can be found at cja.library.columbia.edu.

The event is open to all! Columbia University affiliates are invited to attend in-person on campus, while a Zoom livestream will be available to the public. CJA is an open-access, peer-reviewed platform for creative and academic pieces on Asia, the Asian diaspora, and comparative studies broadly related to Asia. It addresses an urgent need for more representation and understanding of Asian narratives, not in isolation, but as an integral part of the study of humanities and social sciences in academic and artistic circles.

We welcome both academic papers and creative works. Academic papers can be submitted as “notes," shorter essays of 1,500-4,000 words, or “articles,” longer papers of 4,000+ words. Creative works must be under 2,000 words, and can include visual art, poetry, prose, and original translations. Current undergraduate students and recent graduates (Class of 2022) from all majors, tracks, and class years at any accredited university are encouraged to submit.

The regular deadline for submissions is September 23, 2022, by 11:59 PM EST. The priority deadline is September 9, 2022, by 11:59 PM EST. Submissions will be reviewed on a rolling basis, and all applicants will hear back about the status of their submission by early October.

Inaugural CJA Launch Event: April 29, 2022

Everyone is welcome to our inaugral Columbia Journal of Asia (CJA) launch event, from 2:30-4pm EST on Friday, April 29, 2022. The event will be hybrid, with an in-person component open to Columbia community members hosted in Fayerweather 411, and a zoom option open to all. Our launch will feature presentations from the authors and editors of our creative and academic pieces for CJA's first-ever issue, alongside a panel discussion with CJA's faculty advisory board and open Q&A. Spring 2022: Call for Submissions

The Columbia Journal of Asia (CJA) is currently accepting submissions for its first issue! 

We welcome both academic papers (notes, which are research papers of 1,500-4,000 words, and articles, which are manuscripts of >4,000 words) and creative works (<2,000 words), which includes and is not limited to poetry, prose, and original translations. Undergraduate students of all majors, tracks, and class years at any accredited university are encouraged to submit. 

The regular deadline for submissions is Feb. 28, 2022, by 11:59 PM EST. The priority deadline is Feb. 14, 2022, by 11:59 PM EST. Submissions will be reviewed on a rolling basis, and all applicants will hear back about the status of their submission by mid-March.
