The Columbia Journal of Asia

Welcome to the Columbia Journal of Asia.

The Columbia Journal of Asia (CJA) is an open-access, peer-reviewed platform for undergraduate creative and academic pieces on Asia and the Asian diaspora. Developed at Columbia University in partnership with Columbia Libraries, CJA addresses an urgent need for representation and understanding of Asian narratives—not in isolation, but as an integral part of the study of humanities and social sciences in academic and artistic circles. We are open for submissions to Volume IV, until 11:59 p.m. EST on September 14th, 2025. For more updates, follow us on Facebook, Twitter, and Linkedin, and register as a reader on our site.

Welcome to our inaugural issue of the Columbia Journal of Asia (CJA), an initiative that has been nearly one year in the making. Volume I, Issue 1 of CJA features eighteen creative and scholarly pieces by undergraduates and recent graduates from across the United States, Europe, and Asia, presented in three sections: creative works, which include art, poetry, and translations; notes, which are brief academic essays; and articles, which are long-form research papers. These works, spanning the arts, history, political science, and literature, illuminate narratives of imperial domination and paths to decolonization, of assimilation and integration amidst Asian diasporas, and of wartime resistance, mediated through the lens of gender. In so doing, they invite an inclusive view of Asia itself—one that transcends the borders of postcolonial nation-states and Cold War regional divides, that situates Asian narratives in the context of transnational and global shifts, that includes the experiences of Asian diasporas across the world. We hope you enjoy reading Volume I, Issue 1 of CJA.

Panel: Storytelling, Culture and History in East Asian Language Learning

Join the Columbia Journal of Asia for an academic panel on “Storytelling, Cultural Connections, and Historical Threads” in Japanese, Korean, and Chinese language pedagogy! The panel will feature Dr. Fumiko Nazikian, Dr. Ji-Young Jung, and Dr. Lening Liu, and will be moderated by Sue Min Park (Teachers College). By reimagining language learning as a dynamic, interpretive practice and challenging dominant ideologies in textbooks, the panelists will offer fresh insights into how language education can transform the ways we connect with both ourselves and others. Whether you're a language learner, educator, or simply curious about the intersections of language, culture, and identity, we hope to see you there! The panel will be held on Friday, April 25, from 3:30 to 5:00 PM in Hamilton 717; please RSVP here.
