In 2014, the urban population was 54% of the global population. In 1960, it was just 34%. This urban population is continuing to grow at a staggering rate in many countries. Given that so much of the world lives in cities, urban sustainability is a field of growing importance. From green roofs to public transportation and climate change adaptation, there are many exciting and complex questions surrounding how cities can become more sustainable, resilient, and low-impact.

Consilience: the Journal of Sustainable Development invites you to submit a piece for our essay contest on urban sustainability issues. In addition to our bi-annual issue, we post articles weekly on our website, in an effort to better depict the constantly changing and dynamic nature of the field of sustainable development. Enter our essay contest and be published in Briefings, and win prizes if you receive first, second, or third place.
